As civil society crumbles around him, Bruce Wayne's long-suppressed vigilante side finally breaks free of its self-imposed shackles. Together with inker Klaus Janson and colorist Lynn Varley, writer/artist Frank Miller completely reinvents the legend of Batman in his saga of a near-future Gotham City gone to rot, ten years after the Dark Knight's retirement.Ĭrime runs rampant in the streets, and the man who was Batman is still tortured by the memories of his parents' murders. Giving Batman a mental illness just makes him an antihero which is something Batman shouldn't be.This masterpiece of modern comics storytelling brings to vivid life a dark world and an even darker man. When back then before Frank Miller fans were able to agree upon the fact that Batman wasn't mentally ill. My other problem is that because of Frank Miller, it's now debated amongst fans whether Batman has a mental illness or not. If he was so cynical then he would have been killing people, Batman is the light in our darkness. But the thing is Batman is a detective, and is far from cynical. Now you might ask "But shouldn't DC make the Dark Knight Returns Batman canon since people really liked that take on the character?" Here's the thing, people like characters who are cynical and antihero like, so of course people are going like this version of Batman, because he has those rebellious traits. Now again this is an elseworld's tale of the Caped Crusader but my problem is the fact that writers have adopted this idea that Batman is cynical and almost an antihero. While his Batman is not as brutal as the Punisher, the similarities come from the fact of how this version of Batman and Punisher are very cynical. Now The Dark Knight Returns is an elseworlds story let's get that out of the way, but my issue was that Frank Miller wrote his version of Batman as a Punisher type character.

But my issues lay more with the fact of how it changed Batman in a very bad way.

While I do think it is light years away from being the best Batman story, it still is a well told story. Now let me just clarify something that I like the Dark Knight Returns.
